Research interests:

  • Microbial – animal interactions:
    • Mechanisms
    • Effect on host fitness, evolution and ecology
  • Microbial ecology, community structure and biogeography
  • Marine biology and biodiversity
  • Functional metagenomics
Microorganisms throughout the world’s oceans shape marine ecosystems and communities through their interactions with other microbes, multicellular organisms and the environment. I am particularly interested in elucidating the nature and functionalities of microbial – invertebrate symbioses. In the Hallam Lab, I am studying such associations using the symbiotic (commensal) relationship between the demosponge Axinella mexicana and the aerobic ammonia oxidizing thaumarchaeote Cenarchaeum symbiosum as a model system. Specifically, I am interested in exploring the mechanisms employed by the host to recognize its microbial partner and, in turn, how the symbiont evades the host immune response without compromising the host’s defenses against infection.
